What Is Greenwashing?
Greenwashing- You may have heard this term before, especially if you’ve been switching to more natural products. It’s something that a LOT of people fall victim to, so listen up!
Greenwashing is when companies mislead consumers by claiming that their products are safe, non-toxic, eco-friendly, and natural, when in reality they are NOT.
The problem is that there is ZERO regulation about what “green words” you’re allowed to put on a label. Ie: “all natural” or “eco-friendly” or even having the word or colour “green” can be deceptive.
Some ingredients to watch out for when looking at cleaning products:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - aka SLS. (I will do a separate post on this as it’s highly controversial.)
- Fragrance, or Parfum - (see our insta post on the truth about synthetic fragrances.)
- Phenoxyethanol
- Parabens (“ethyl,” “butyl,” “methyl,” and “propyl” are from the paraben family even if the word “paraben” isn’t in the name)
Ok so this is just the tip of the iceberg on “greenwashing”. Don’t let so called “green cleaners” trick you! We are smarter than this 🤓.
