Natural Ways to Clean Soap Scum
Soap Scum- Any cleaner’s biggest enemy! Nothing more unsatisfying than when you scrub your glass shower only to be left with a cloudy gross mess. Soap scum people!
Soap scum is created when the fatty acids in your soap mix with minerals like calcium and magnesium in water. The result is a white, scummy build-up that is insoluble in water, making it incredibly tough to remove! Even worse, soap scum can be a breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. Yuck!
How to make natural soap scum cleaner:
Here are 3 DIY recipes to make a cleaner that will blast that scummy mess!
- Mix equal parts vinegar and dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray liberally on the soap scum and LET IT SIT for at least 15min. The acid in the vinegar will dissolve the scum which will be easier to wipe clean. Scrub with a scrubbie or microfibre cloth, rinse and repeat as necessary.
- Mix 3 tbsps of BORAX with a dash of dish soap and and 1/3 cup of hot water in a bucket, almost making a runny paste. Apply liberally on the soap scum and let it sit for 15min. Scrub with a scrubbie or microfibre cloth, rinse, and repeat as necessary.
- None other than our Mint Cleaning scrub! Apply on the wet scrubbie or microfibre cloth and scrub away and watch the magic happen before your very eyes. This is obviously our fav recipe, but perhaps we are a bit biased;)
The trick is to PREVENT the soap scum from occurring in the first place! See our post on ways to prevent hard water stains and soap scum!
